The Garden Report Spring '03

Hot dry spring with high temperature in garden soaring to high 80s by early June..  Moved lots of plants around in early spring, planted a few new ones even though there really isn't any more room.  Dug out an old forsythia to gain a little more space.  Finally bit the bullet and dug out the rosa 'Paul's Himalayan Musk,' leaving a gaping hole in the garden which I hope will be filled by its replacement, rosa 'Joseph's Coat' in coming years.  The musk was beautiful but just too big and hard to control.

Here's the urn bed in June.  I've been mostly satisfied with this bed in recent years, just moving plants a foot or two here and there for better spacing, but not changing them.
Here's the column bed directly across from the urn, bordered by that section of fence that seems impervious to whatever vines I plant intending to consume it.  This year, I'm planning to water this area better.  It is encroached upon by coniferous tree roots and gets very dry by mid season.  Perhaps a year of good water will get the vines established enough to hold their own in coming seasons.
Not the greatest photo subject, but I couldn't resist celebrating the first bloom on the stipa gigantica in the zeriscaped garden.
Rhododendrons mixing with white flowers and a wispy clematis intruding.  Now, those white flower stalks arise in May from an evergreen clump with iris-like foliage.  I forgot the name of this plant.  Can you remind me?  Anyway, the clematis is 'Huldine;' beautiful white flowers with lavender backs for two months in summer.  Quite vigorous, too.  Planning to grow it through the rosa 'Joseph's Coat' when it gets big enough.
Seasonal shot from the back deck in May
Here's a very early season shot taken in April.  Lots of foliage coming along after the mild winter.  Still putting down spring compost at this point (wheel barrow in the background) but I stopped to take some photos.
