The
Garden Report Fall '02
|
Fall
continued dry, eventually breaking a four-month drought record for Seattle; 1.8
inches of rain July through October. The garden also experienced early
freezes. Several days in mid October reached 29 degrees at night, damaging
some of our tropical plants before I brought them inside for the winter.
November brought more typical rains. All of the photos this month were
taken in mid November, except for the seasonal backyard photo, after the series
of freezes.

This
is the back yard shot taken in mid October, just before the freezes. |
 |
I
couldn't resist another photo of our star November vignette taken again
this year. Some Mahonia in front, followed by a lone Typha latifolia
(cattail), Callicarpa 'Profusion' and backed by the spectacular Parrotia
persica. This is just one of many gorgeous moments in November, a
garden season that I have begun to really appreciate. |
 |
The
dark foliage of Physocarpus 'Diablo' lights up just before falling.
The leaves are so bright that the stems almost disappear by contrast in
the dark November ambiance, appearing like a flock of brightly plumed
tropical birds caught in mid-flight. A hebe ducks nervously beneath
them. |
 |
Grasses were at their peak all over the garden in October and November.
I've forgotten the name of this one, but I like the contrast of its
shimmering blooms paired with the foliage of Cotinus 'Grace.' |
 |
The incomparable Parthenocissus henryana. Get this vine. Put
it in shade. |
