Welcome to the Gannon Garden Garden News: The Gannon Garden appears in the July issue of Fine Gardening advertising the Garden Conservancy Open Days tour which took place May 31 in Seattle. Look for announcements of further opportunities to view this garden on this web site. This is the home page of the Gannon Garden, a small collector's garden in Seattle, WA. The 3000 sq. ft. garden occupies two city lots and houses about 500 species of plants suitable to our maritime zone 8 climate. Most of the garden receives morning sun and afternoon shade provided by two large conifers on a neighboring property. These conifers also block the prevailing coastal winds, sheltering the garden from winter storms. The back yard features several distinct cultural habitats within its single room. The centerpiece of the garden is a 2500 gallon koi pond which houses a small group of fish and several water plants. Adjacent to the pond lies a bog constructed with a buried butyl liner and contains moisture-loving plants such as Gunnera tinctoria. A small lawn (and I mean small!) and patio also bracket the pond. The back yard is also home to sun and shade planting beds hosting perennials, hardy woody plants and seasonal tender tropicals. The front yard consists of a large kitchen garden, more sun and shade beds and an area devoted to low-water plants such as alpines. Finally, garden artwork is found throughout the site to add focal points and structure to the plantings, which can sometimes become chaotic. This web site offers a quarterly pictorial of the garden and a narrative of my experiences by season. Since I collect photos throughout the season and post them as seasons change, the Garden Report is always a season behind. However, I have an extensive archive of previous reports and direct the curious to last year's report of the current season to provide an idea of what the garden might look like today. But considering the rate at which I seem to change things, please take this as a rough guideline! Also, please be tolerant of my garbled Latin. The Gannon Garden is featured on several garden tours. To visit our garden, look for announcements of these tours on this web site, or join the Northwest Perennial Alliance for admission to this and dozens of other beautiful gardens in the Puget Sound region.
